It is well documented that physical activity is decreasing across many parts of the world. This is largely due to increasingly prevalent desk-based occupations and our reliance on motor vehicles for transport, as well as our choice of leisure activities, such as watching the television and playing computer games. Together with an ageing population, chronic illnesses such as type 2 diabetes, fatty liver disease and heart disease are on the rise.
By harnessing the power of experimental science, the Lifestyle theme of the NIHR Leicester BRC explores and develops innovative lifestyle interventions, focussing on diet and physical activity, to help prevent and treat chronic disease for the benefit of all.
The lifestyle theme is split across the Leicester Diabetes Centre at Leicester General Hospital and the National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine at Loughborough University.

This provides the experimental foundation for extending the range and types of therapeutic interventions available in the prevention and treatment of chronic disease.
